The Advance Centre for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Tertiary Students
The Advance Centre for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Tertiary Students is the culmination of nearly 20 years of hard work by many dedicated individuals in the sector. These individuals wanted to see better resources and services available for Deaf and hearing impaired tertiary students who are often under-represented in the tertiary education sector.
The Advance Centre is a project funded by Tertiary Education Commission and is managed by LIFE Unlimited. LIFE Unlimited is based in Hamilton and is best known for providing services to people with disabilities, including hearing therapy for adults with hearing impairment.
The Advance Centre aims to play a pivotal role in enhancing educational access for Deaf and Hearing Impaired tertiary students in Auckland . It is expected that the Centre will contribute significantly to the recruitment and retention of Deaf and Hearing Impaired students at tertiary institutions.
Services include:
- Facilitating a variety of workshops such as Electronic Note-taking, OOS prevention for NZ Sign Language Interpreters, and Transitioning from high school to tertiary education.
- Providing information and advice for students and tertiary institute staff
- Organising bridging and transition programmes as required
- Assessment of student needs and resources
- Advice on equipment available to assist studying
- Working with Disability Services Staff at tertiary institutions to support enrolled Deaf and Hearing Impaired students
The Advisory Group members are selected on their ability to represent sector interests, which includes students, a representative from an Auckland Tertiary Institution, Kelston Deaf Education Centre (KDEC), Deaf Community Member, and Parent’s group.
