Five Positive Action Courses are run per year, which can accommodate between 10 and 30 participants. Our Service Brokerage service is available to give participants support when going to a job interview, support with accessing government and private agencies for benefit enquiries and any other aspects of their lives that they require support with.
Day One
Day one concentrates on introductions of participants, setting group norms, identifying areas in particular where participants hope to develop.
We do a variety of activities with the view of finding out about each other in the group. Later in the day participants are encouraged to identify areas where they do in fact possess particular skills - through the medium of art in the form of a self- portrait.
The facilitator concentrates on developing some group dynamics that will be effective and to ensure that people are in groups with similar interests and abilities - these may have been deterimined in the pre-course interview but are subject to change.
Day Two
This is the information gathering day. They start compiling information for their C.V.'s and begin the goal setting component of this course. This is "Life Mapping" which helps identify the individuals short and long term goals in graphic or word form, in which ever medium the individual chooses to express their goals.
This day is what we term the "planting the apple tree" day. This analogy is used to describe and explore each participant's personal strengths and is aimed at building self esteem and self awareness.
Day Three to Day Five
Concentrate on encouraging the course participants into the community and meeting with agencies that interest them.
The course participants are divided into sub groups, depending on the similarities of interest and where the participants want to visit. eg Volunteering Waikato may be a service some may be interested in, for gaining skills that they have been unable to access before.
Participants who are interested in animals may wish to go to the SPCA or the Pound or other potential places of employment focusing on animals, while not forgetting the possibilities of accessing employment.
They will be introduced to employment agencies (appointments are set up prior to training week) to assist with the job seeking skills and prospects.
Other suggestions of agencies to visit may include:
- WorkBridge, Career Moves, Career Services, Literacy Waikato, Te Wananga O Aotearoa and other educational institutions.
- The purpose for this to introduce each participant to services which are available in the community for them. This also gives them an opportunity to become active in their own communities, whether is be for paid employment or as a volunteer.
- At the conclusion of the course we will ensure each participant has a completed Personal Profile/CV, using the LIFE Unlimited template.
- At the completion of the course we hold a social activity, which includes a special luncheon.
- Appointments can be made with the Brokerage Service for follow up meetings.
- Any referrals to employment/career specialists are completed.
