Disability Awareness Training

Overview

LIFE Unlimited assists other community organisations and businesses with disability awareness training and offers access to up-to-date information on disability issues. This training is available for any group or organisation.

The New Zealand Disability Strategy identified the need for greater awareness of people with disabilities and the issues that surround them and because of our expertise in this area we provide training to a variety of government departments as well as District Health Boards.

What will LIFE Unlimited offer Participants?

The suggested time frame would ideally be one full day (9.00am to 3.00pm) but we are able to tailor our training session to any time frame that will meet the needs of the participants.

In conjunction with the training session we will provide a training manual which will assist participants with training their staff members. We will also be available for any on-going training that may be needed.

What are the Objectives of this Training?

The main objective of this training is to assist the participants to become more aware about disability issues and the language of disability.

We will also provide strategies that will assist participants to implement these key aspects into their daily professional practice that will enable them to effectively educate their colleagues.

This will encompass:

Social Role Valorisation:

  • The definition of SRV
  • The impact of SRV on our lives

The language of Disability:

  • The difference between Impairment, Handicap and Disability

Types of Disability:

A brief overveiw of various disabilities and their impact.

Examining the Various Models of Disability:

  • Political
  • Social
  • Medical
  • Community attitude to disability
  • Accessibility - looking at our environment

Practical Exercises around Disability Barriers:

  • Simulations (physical experience highlighting key issues outlined in the training) incorporating a comprehensive debriefing and reflective session.
  • Comprehensive demonstration of assistive and adaptive equipment.

Training is facilitated by key staff members of our service and people with disabilities who have a diverse array of skills and expertise.
