What is a Hearing Therapist?

A Hearing Therapist advises and supports anybody who experiences difficulty in communicating effectively because of a hearing problem.

A hearing impairment is not a visible disability so does not arouse public sympathy, but it can have a devastating effect on everyday life.

Problems concerning home, work and social occasions can be discussed, and advice given, that may help alleviate the stress of living with a hearing impairment.

Hearing Therapy intervention may prevent a hearing loss from becoming a serious problem.

Anyone, with any degree of hearing loss, no matter how great or small the loss, can benefit from seeing a hearing therapist.

What can a Hearing Therapist do?

A Hearing Therapist can:

  • Do a hearing evaluation and discuss the problem with you
  • Help you use your hearing more effectively
  • Teach ways of improving your communication skills
  • Help you use hearing aid(s) to greater effect
  • Give information about equipment available to assist with daily living, eg, telephone, television
  • Offer information and advice to you and your family
  • Teach speech reading and provide auditory training
  • Offer advice, practical help to people with tinnitus
  • Provide information about hearing loss and its prevention to professional groups, voluntary organisations and the general public
